How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your income and answer five questions. Type your monthly take-home pay, then say where you live, how you get around, who you budget for, what you spend on and your main money goal.
  2. Read your budget plan. See a recommended amount for each category, a Budget Health score from 0 to 100 and tips based on your answers.
  3. Follow your goal. Track a house deposit, an emergency fund, a debt payoff or long term savings, and recalculate whenever your situation changes.

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

The 50/30/20 rule is a simple way to split your take-home pay. About 50% goes on needs such as housing, food, transport and utilities. About 30% goes on wants such as eating out, hobbies and streaming. The last 20% goes towards savings and paying off debt. It was popularised by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi in their book All Your Worth.

It is a starting point, not a law. In an expensive city needs can take more than half your income, and on a tight budget you may save less. Our calculator adjusts the split for your household, home and country, so you get a plan closer to real life.

Budgeting tips for UK residents

  • Compare the big bills once a year. Energy, broadband, insurance and your mortgage rate are where staying put usually costs you most.
  • Build a safety net first. Aim for three months of essential costs in an easy-access account, and check that your savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
  • Get free help if money is tight. MoneyHelper, Citizens Advice and StepChange give free, impartial guidance, and you can start at MoneyHelper.

Frequently asked questions

Is this budget calculator free?

Yes. It is free to use, there is nothing to download and you do not need an account.

Is my information private?

Your answers are worked out in your browser. If you accept analytics cookies, we save your answers without your name to see how the tool is used, with your income stored encrypted and only ever shown as a range. If you subscribe to the newsletter we also keep your email address. You can reject cookies and still use everything.

How accurate are the recommended amounts?

They are everyday guidelines based on typical shares of income for your household and country, not personal advice. Your real costs will differ, so use the plan as a starting point and adjust it.

How is the Budget Health score calculated?

It adds up five things: whether you save, how much your housing costs, whether you have debt, how many optional spending areas you have, and how your income compares with a typical level for your household. It is a simple guide, not a credit score.

Which countries and currencies does it support?

The UK, the euro area, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania, plus US dollars for everyone else. We guess your currency from your device settings and you can change it at any time.
